A Slice of the Pie
For the duration of the exhibition DYOR, a 16 square-metre LED wall will display a circular pie-like shape divided into six slices. A dedicated website (a-slice-of-the-pie.live) will livestream the pie 24/7. Via the website, artists will be able to purchase one or more slices and fill them with their own artworks, thus becoming full participants in the exhibition. To define the appearance of the whole pie, they will have to collaborate or compete or hustle – or simply leave the final composition to chance.

Once per day, at a random time either determined by an algorithm or through a paid option on the website, the current state of the pie will be frozen and subsequently minted as an NFT and sold on objkt.com. The profits from the sale will be shared among the creators of the pie minted and A Slice of the Pie. Every 24 hours the whole process starts again, resulting in more than 100 pies created during the exhibition, even while the physical exhibition space is closed to the public.
A Slice of the Pie derives from the artists’ ongoing reflection on gatekeeping in the art world and the monetisation of access to it. Focussing on the crypto scene, the artwork updates these themes, which Lorusso and Schmieg first explored in Projected Capital (2018). A Slice of the Pie allows both cooperation and competition, both consensual decision-making and winner-takes-it-all resolutions. The art project is inspired by the dry language of financial charts and dashboards as well as the cutthroat design of ‘battle royale’ games. Launching in a time of backlash towards crypto, A Slice of the Pie puts its promises of participation to the test.
Silvio Lorusso is a writer, artist and designer based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 2018 he published his first book entitled Entreprecariat. He is an assistant professor and vice-director of the Centre for Other Worlds at the Lusófona University in Lisbon. Lorusso holds a Ph.D. in Design Sciences from the Iuav University of Venice.

Sebastian Schmieg investigates the algorithmic circulation of images, texts and bodies. He creates playful interventions that penetrate the shiny surfaces of our networked society and explore the realities that lie behind them. Während der Dauer der Ausstellung DYOR wird auf einer 16 Quadratmeter grossen LED-Wand eine kreisförmige, kuchenähnliche Form dargestellt, die in sechs Scheiben aufgeteilt ist. Auf einer eigens dafür kreierten Website (a-slice-of-the-pie.live) wird die Pie 24/7 per Livestream übertragen. Über die Website können Künstler eine oder mehrere Stücke kaufen und sie mit ihren eigenen Kunstwerken füllen, wodurch sie zu vollwertigen Teilnehmern der Ausstellung werden. Um das Aussehen des gesamten Pies zu bestimmen, müssen sie zusammenarbeiten, miteinander konkurrieren oder sich beeilen – oder sie überlassen die endgültige Zusammensetzung einfach dem Zufall.
Einmal am Tag, zu einem beliebigen Zeitpunkt, der entweder durch einen Algorithmus oder durch eine kostenpflichtige Option auf der Website bestimmt wird, wird der aktuelle Zustand des Pies eingefroren und dann als NFT geprägt und auf objkt.com verkauft. Der Gewinn aus dem Verkauf wird unter den Schöpfern des geminteten Pies und A Slice of the Pie aufgeteilt. Alle 24 Stunden beginnt der Prozess von neuem, so dass im Laufe der Ausstellung mehr als 100 Pies entstehen. Selbst dann, wenn der physische Ausstellungsraum für die Öffentlichkeit geschlossen ist.
A Slice of the Pie ist das Ergebnis einer kontinuierlichen Reflexion der Künstler über das Gatekeeping in der Kunstwelt und die Monetarisierung des Zugangs zu dieser. Mit dem Fokus auf die Krypto-Szene aktualisiert das Kunstwerk diese Themen, die Lorusso und Schmieg erstmals in Projected Capital (2018) untersucht haben. A Slice of the Pie ermöglicht sowohl Kooperation als auch Wettbewerb, sowohl einvernehmliche als auch «Winner-takes-it-all»-Entscheidungen. Das Kunstprojekt ist inspiriert von der nüchternen Sprache der Finanzdiagramme und Dashboards sowie dem halsbrecherischen Design von «Battle Royale»-Spielen. A Slice of the Pie wird in einer Zeit lanciert, in der Kryptowährungen auf Ablehnung und Kritik stossen, und stellt das Versprechen der Beteiligung auf die Probe.
Silvio Lorusso ist Schriftsteller, Künstler und Designer und lebt in Rotterdam, Niederlande. Im Jahr 2018 veröffentlichte er sein erstes Buch mit dem Titel Entreprecariat. Er ist Assistenzprofessor und stellvertretender Direktor des Zentrums für andere Welten an der Universität Lusófona in Lissabon.
